Patricia Morse, LCSW, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Chief of Social Work at the LSU Health Sciences Center Department of Psychiatry and Edward Morse, Ph.D., an Associate Professor of Sociology at Tulane University, an Adjunct Associate Professor in Pediatrics at Tulane Health Sciences Center and a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at LSU Health Sciences Center, facilitated a "Grant Writing" workshop at CADA on Friday, June 25, 2004. In the training participants learned how and where to look for funding; the elements of a successful grant application; how to determine what funders want; how to satisfy accountability requirements; and how to write convincingly and persuasively.

Paul Toriello, RhD, CRC, BCSAC, Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans (LSUHSC), facilitated a "Group MET" training at CADA on Wednesday, May 26, 2004. In the training participants went through a brief review of the spirit, skills, and techniques of MET. After the review participants learned how to translate their skills and techniques for use in a group setting. Participants were also given potential solutions to challenges specific to the use of MET in groups.

Paul Toriello, RhD, CRC, BCSAC, Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans (LSUHSC), facilitated a two day "Motivational Enhancement Therapy Training for Substance-Involved Individuals" workshop at CADA on Thursday, April 1, 2004 and Friday, April 2, 2004. In the training, the participants learned the principles and theory of motivation, behavior change, and MET; how to identify and most effectively work with a client's stage of change; how MET differs from other therapy and counseling approaches; Specific MET techniques and how to apply them, and the current research in the effectiveness of MET.

Ronald T. Murphy, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor of Psychology at Dillard University in New Orleans, facilitated a "MET with PTSD and Substance Abuse" workshop at CADA on Friday, March 26, 2004. In the training, participants were given a brief review in motivational enhancement intervention, specifically designed for a group setting, to help individuals suffering from PTSD and comorbid disorders, including alcohol and drug problems. After the brief review of basic MET principles, the training focused on how to use these skills to help clients recognize the need to change problem behaviors associated with PTSD; to identify possible behaviors to norms; and to help clients decide about the need to change behaviors which they agree they do, but are not sure require change.

In the training, participants learned how to better roll with client resistance by improving their reflective listening skills.

Paul Toriello, RhD, CRC, BCSAC, Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Counseling at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans (LSUHSC), facilitated a"Motivational Enhancement Therapy Training for Clinical Supervisors" at CADA on Friday, November 14, 2003. In the training, participants learned advanced MET skills, how to apply the principles and technique of MET with supervisors, and the Methods for facilitating the development of supervisors MET skills and attitudes about MET.

Dr. Douglas Cook, Medical Director of Palmetto Addiction Recovery Center in Rayville, LA, facilitated a workshop on "Relapse Prevention in Substance Abuse Treatment" at CADA on Friday, September 26, 2003. Thirty-one substance abuse professionals attended the workshop. Dr. Cook discussed the causes and conditions of relapse following treatment for substance dependence. He also explored the behavioral, spiritual, and psychological causes of relapse; the relationship of concurrent Axis I and Axis II disorders on relapse; the failures of continuing care planning that promote relapse; and failures of monitoring that predispose to relapse.

William April, LCSW, BCSAC, facilitated " A Primer on Drug Pharmacology & Addiction: The Science of a Brain Disease" at CADA on Friday, August 22, 2003. Twenty-two substance abuse professionals attended the workshop, in which they learned about the structure and organization of the brain as relevant to substance abuse disorders; neuropharmacology and pharmacokinetics as they impact clinical work; and how to integrate new research data into clinical and teaching styles.

John King, Executive Director of the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA), facilitated a workshop on " Stress Management for Professionals: How to use it, how to teach it to your clients" on Friday, July 18, 2003. Fourteen Substance Abuse Professionals attended the workshop, in which they learned about the nature of stress and how it occurs; how to gauge levels and identify sources of stress; and how to teach clients these skills.
