Evidence-Based Addictions Treatment for Special Populations

The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA), the Substance Abuse
Services Alliance (SASA), and NOPIC are pleased to offer "Bringing
it Home: Evidence-Based Addictions Treatment for Special Populations."
This two-day conference will focus on current issues and practices
in providing effective treatment pertaining to special populations
including women and adolescents, in special settings such as corrections,
schools, and communities. The first day of the conference will feature
Dr. Stephanie Covington, who will discuss the integration of trauma
and substance abuse treatment for women and girls. The second day
of the conference will feature workshops on treatment for adolescents
and individuals with co-occurring disorders, facilitated by a variety
of local speakers.
The featured speaker,
Stephanie Covington, Ph.D., LCSW, is the co-director of both the
Institute for Relational Development and the Center for Gender and
Justice, based in La Jolla, California. Please see Dr. Covington's

Local speakes will include
Stephen Phillippi (Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center);
Karen Nelkin and Christine Bonura (Jefferson Parish Human Services
Authority); Reginald Parquet and Dr. Richard Ager (Tulane School
of Social Work); Dr. Madeline Uddo and Dr. C. Lauren Franklin (Veterans
Affairs Medical Center); and Dr. Kenneth Roy (Addiction Recovery
Resources of New Orleans).
Early Bird Registration
through August 31, 2004:
$130 for two days, $100 for Sept. 9 only, $60 for Sept. 10 only.
Groups of at least five employees from the same organization can
receive a $10 discount on the two-day rate.
CEUs will be provided
for social workers, board certified substance abuse counselors,
nurses, and licensed professional counselors.

CONTINUING
EDUCATION WORKSHOPS
In
July of 2003, NOPIC began co-sponsoring monthly workshops with the
Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. To date, we have conducted three
workshops in the areas of stress management, pharmacology and addiction,
and relapse prevention (see
descriptions of past workshops).
The workshops typically last four hours, and four continuing education
units are provided. NOPIC and CADA plan to resume the monthly workshop
series this winter, focusing on evidence-based practices; please
contact us if you want to join our mailing list to be notified of
these training opportunities.
